I’m pretty sure Mr Chopra knows nothing of me, but every now and again I wonder if he has a secret camera hidden somewhere in ETG HQ.
Life has indeed been chaotic. What’s new?
I’ve been juggling motherhood, work and travel while redesigning the website.
I know it’s not crazy colourful. It hasn’t got lots of bells and whistles, and it’s still not completely finished, but it’s a big improvement on the previous site.
What do you think?
For the last year or so (maybe longer) I’ve been keen to change the look of Eco Traveller. The old girl has been around for almost four years now, and she was looking a bit tired and dated, much like her owner.
The previous layout was just too busy; too much going on ‘above the fold’. I was getting sore eyes looking at it and, to be honest, was falling out of love with the entire blog as a result.
It wasn’t exactly blogger burn out – I still have the ideas and the desire to get them out there – I just didn’t want to post on the site because it was in dire need of an update. I have so many great images I want to share of recent travels, articles I’ve had in draft for months, waiting in the wings to be published, yet I’ve had a real block about adding them because they deserve a better platform.
I thought I found the *perfect* new look a number of times. I’d spend hours and hours tracking down a theme I loved and download it, only to find it really wasn’t ideal, so I’d start the whole process again.
Then, when I finally had everything in place and was almost ready to publish, I updated WordPress to make sure everything worked well. Big mistake! This not-so-clever move resulted in the “White Screen of Death.” Yes, it is as serious as it sounds. I couldn’t get into the back end of the site at all. And the more I fiddled with the code, the more I messed it up.
Hours and days when I could have been writing were lost to fixing the site. I eventually gave up and called in the professionals. The amazing Chris from RTW Labs saved my life – in a day, pretty much. *Note: don’t try to do everything yourself.
I had big plans of teasing readers about the blog redesign, but it’s ended up taking so long I’ve decided to just put it out there and will toy and tamper live on air until I’m happy with the look and layout.
I could have waited till the New Year. I could have made a big announcement and had a dramatic reveal all à la [insert name of home redesign show here], but instead I gave myself (and you guys) an early Christmas present.
Simple, clean, readable. I hope you like.
